The Australian War Memorial has a comprehensive collection of Australian military records, including the roll of honour, the commemorative roll, nominal rolls, embarkation rolls, honours and awards, and wounded and missing files.
National Archives of Australia
The National Archives hold a vast range of service records across all conflicts, many of which have been digitised and are free to view online. This is a great place to find primary evidence of military service, medical history, decorations and other documentation about your silent mentor.

The AIF Project covers the Great War 1914-1918, and is drawn from a range of official sources including personal files on the National Archives website, and embarkation and nominal rolls on the Australian War Memorial website.
